A Shift from Active Stock Picking to Asset Management

There was substantial migration from directly-held stocks into mutual funds and other ICs. This was partly caused by public weariness with day trading and micromanagement of their own household portfolios. Another likely contributor to the decline in stocks held directly: some pullback in equity risk, as investors took refuge in more traditional debt instruments (bonds and bank deposits).

In 2006, the ATR KimEng Equity Opportunity Fund was one of the best performing equity mutual funds in the country. The fund posted a return for that year of 45.52%, beating the Philippine Stock Exchange Index (PSEi) by 323 basis points. The Funds assets are allocated in Conglomerates, Energy and Utilities, Telecom, Banking, Food and Beverage/Retail, Property, Ports/Transportation, and Mining.

Investment Objective:

Established in 2004, this mutual fund is designed to seek absolute return through long-term capital appreciation through investment in listed and non-listed equity securities of Philippine and non-Philippine companies. Investment in securities abroad shall be limited to 20% of the Fund’s net asset value.
